Texas coach Steve Sarkisian provides update on quarterback Quinn Ewers' status
View Date:2024-12-24 04:17:14
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told media members on Monday that quarterback Quinn Ewers has been given a "week-to-week" designation on the team's injury report.
Ewers was injured during the third quarter of a 31-24 win at Houston this past Saturday. Orangebloods, ESPN and 247Sports all reported on Sunday that Ewers had suffered an AC joint sprain.
During the course of an 11-play drive on Saturday, Ewers took a sack in which he landed on his right shoulder and he later led into a collision with Houston defender David Ugwoegbu with his left shoulder. Ewers was pulled after that possession and he left the stadium with his right arm in a sling.

Sarkisian said he didn't think that Ewers staying in the game and trying to play through the injury might have led to a more severe injury. But it's clear that Ewers wasn't injured on the big hit at the end of that scramble, based on what Sarkisian said.
"Clearly he was limited, and to his credit, he knew he couldn't do it," Sarkisian said. "He knew what he was able to give the team wasn't going to be good enough."
Sarkisian pointed to Ewers' conditioning and health as positive factors in his prognosis. "I know he's going to work tirelessly to get back," he said. "These injuries, some guys come back earlier than others. He's in the best shape of his life, so hopefully we get him back sooner rather than later."
Ewers has passed for 1,915 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions during his second season as the team's starter, and his 70.9 completion percentage ranks second in the Big 12 and 10th nationally. Ewers has also scored on five touchdown runs.
Maalik Murphy is listed as the backup quarterback on the Texas depth chart, and the redshirt freshman relieved Ewers on Saturday. Arch Manning, who was a five-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting cycle, is another option for the Longhorns. Sarkisian said on Monday that if the Longhorns were to play that day, Murphy would start. Both players will receive first-team reps this week.
Sarkisian was asked for three positive things Murphy provides. He answered that (1) Murphy's a natural passer who "throws a beautiful ball, and there's not a throw he can't make" along with the fact that (2) the rest of the team likes playing for him — "Inevitably, as a quarterback, you're only as good as the guys around you" — and that (3) Murphy has a good feel for the offense, and understands "what we do and why we do" things.
But also, Murphy has attempted all of eight passes this week. And Manning hasn't seen the field at all. But Sarkisian was talking both quarterbacks up last week over their recent practice performances, and that was before Ewers got hurt. Keep in mind that Manning can play as many as four games and still preserve his redshirt; Texas has five games left in the regular season.
"Not every school is as fortunate as we are to have a quarterbacks room like we have," Sarkisian added.
Sarkisian will next meet with the media on Thursday. No. 7 Texas faces Brigham Young on Saturday.
